Balancing Sides

When I got certified in basic mediation with the LA County Bar Association I learned a lot more than I realized and find that I use that training more than just about anything else I ever went to school for other than reading and writing. The skills of mediation are something I use everyday when I’m working with people and completing projects.

When 2 sides are in the process of reaching an agreement, in order to do that each side gives something up. Mediation isn’t about winning it’s about seeing the whole picture from both sides. Mediation is about understanding why both parties got into the situation in the first place and staying focused on resolving that goal even when life happens.

With a mediation mindset I’m listening to people. When things happen that seem contrary to what I showed up for in the first place that usually requires an effort on my part to clarify my communication with the people involved. Sometimes I’m the one with experience and sometimes I’m not. I have to be realistic about my position with theirs.

Blessings!
Laura
