Get A Director

For any Dudley Moore fans out there, I only share this story to illustrate a point. The man was an incredibly talented artist and the lesson I learned from him was one of the most valuable experiences ever given to me about performing on stage. Now that I have made my disclaimer, here is what I learned from Dudley Moore’s worst performance ever.

One New Year’s Eve, when I was living in Telluride, CO, I was invited to join a friend at a fancy celebrity party followed by a performance with Dudley Moore. Dudley was an amazing classical pianist aside from being a great actor. I got the invite because I had an angle for being there that made my friend laugh and he wanted to see me in action.

When we got to the theater I noticed there wasn’t a director listed in the program. The stage had 2 grand pianos on it. Dudley came out with a female pianist and proceeded to drone through the most horrendous use of talent that I think I’ve ever seen in my life. It was so bad, no one talked to him during the after party. My lesson: Work with a director.

Blessings!
Laura
