Listening

I was in a class today and I noticed something while I was being inundated with pertinent information. Listening is one of the most crucial elements I need to focus on while I’m learning anything. When I listen to what’s being said in a room, I actually do retain a significant amount of information and I also know what’s going on around me.

That may sound like an obvious “duh!” kind of thing to say, but I noticed that there were people in the class that weren’t paying attention to what the instructor was saying and they didn’t know the material as a result. I would bet that people could increase their intelligence by more than 50% if they learned how to listen to people talking to them.

Listening is a skill that I had to re-learn as an adult. My mind was very happy to go off into “never, never land” in self obsessed thoughts (about things that were probably not going to ever happen anyway) while I was supposedly listening to what someone was saying. I actually have a better time listening to other people than to my mind.
