Comprehension

Today I had the privilege of watching a private lesson given to a student by Shmuel Stoch in reading comprehension. I learned far more than I thought I would when I went to the appointment. It gave me a new understanding about how peoples’ minds approach things differently and why misunderstandings can be so prevalent in relationships.

He mentioned that figurative speech is the most misleading form of communication and we use it all the time. He said figurative speech can make understanding what people are talking about difficult for children learning a language. That mainly happens because what we say isn’t at all what we actually mean. He gave examples of one word in figurative speech.

The word HIT is used in many ways. We say, “Let’s hit the road”, or a song is “A big hit” or “She hit it big”. Those meanings are different than saying “He hit the ball”. It made me realize how much I use figurative speech and that isn’t really an accurate use of language. Figurative speech can create confusion and confusion can cause problems.

Blessings!
