It's A Matter Of Soul

I bumped into a writer/director I know when I was out today. He asked me how my CD recording was going which got us talking about making a living with music, screenplays and other forms of art. It helped me to talk with him because he’s an artist who has succeeded commercially as a filmmaker and understands how to be an artist in business.

He talked to me about how tough it is to be a creative person in the entertainment business because when an artist creates something then they’re dealing with their soul in negotiations and that’s harder than working on a business deal that isn’t personal, like selling houses. The person selling the house doesn’t have their soul in the deal.

As an artist, I tend to deal on a soul level anyway. Most people don’t realize that they’re dealing with my soul at all when they’re talking to me or that I might be looking at theirs. The difference between being with someone who is connected with their soul and someone who is not is that the person who is not doesn’t tend to see very much about life.
