Vocal Recording

On Monday, I’m going to the studio to start recording lead vocals. I’ve been listening to my scratch tracks with vocals and my guitar tracks with some percussion on them without vocals so I can practice. How it feels to sing a song and what it sounds like recorded are two completely different things. It’s an enlightening thing to listen to my songs on CD.

This process is giving me a new appreciation as to why people are called recording artists and not recording singers. Just singing a song doesn’t require artistry. Recording a lead vocal for a song does. How the characteristics of the song are emphasized vocally and how phrases are sung in rhythm can make a song amazing or just okay.

Tom Jones is a master at vocal delivery. I don’t know of many singers who could have made the song “Delilah” a hit record. Freddy Mercury’s recording of “Another One Bites The Dust” is probably one of the best vocal tracks ever cut. Annie Lennox has a vocal style that makes listening to a song over and over again a journey of discovery.

Blessings!
