The Bedtime Shema

An orthodox friend gave me a prayer book, called a Siddur, to look over for the weekend. It’s the Sabbath so having something holy to read is a good thing. I live in a Jewish orthodox neighborhood, so I know quite a few very observant Jews. Most of what is in the Siddur is pretty foreign to me. I wasn’t raised with much religion in my family.

One thing I found in the Siddur that I like is the Bedtime Shema. The Shema prayer is the cornerstone of Judaism. “Here O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. Blessed is the name of His glorious Kingdom for all eternity.” Jews love God with all their heart, with all their soul and with all their might. That’s very true in my life even without religion.

The Bedtime Shema has a lot of prayers in addition to the standard Shema. There is one that puts 4 of God’s angels around a person and the Presence of God above their head. I bet I’d sleep much better with angels surrounding me and having the Presence of God above my head. I think I’ll try that out and see what happens.

Blessings!
