Thanks Mom!

Something happened recently that really changed things in how I feel about my life. It was subtle but powerful in how it has taken hold and made an impact. I’m sharing this because I don’t think that parents realize the impact they have on their children with what they say to them. And the change in how my parents talk to me now has helped me a lot.

Lately, my mom has been telling me that she finds who I am and how I show up in a room with people really wonderful and that most people never achieve that in their life. Aside from myself, my mom used to be my harshest critic. I was always hearing about what I wasn’t, what I didn’t have and that maybe I should be doing something else.

The change in focus with my mom from what I don’t have to finding value in what I do have started with me acknowledging that for myself, although sometimes it takes determination for me to able to do that. And it wasn’t like I was looking for my mom’s approval. But it did make me feel a lot better knowing that my mom thinks I’m okay.
