Thank You For Smoking

I just got back from the premiere of “Thank You For Smoking”. It’s a brilliant satire film about the tobacco industry’s lobby. Everything about the film was entertaining for me. It was so well done. The art of logic in how to win an argument is displayed with such humor and grace, it’s poetic. It’s a film that could be studied in school just for that.

The writing really struck home for me and brought back memories of my political science days in college. Listening was critical in bringing someone over to my side in an argument. I remember once there was a guy in my class that had a bull headed attitude towards the cold war. I didn’t disagree with him. I just thought he was closed minded.

I spent the better part of an hour arguing his points until I convinced him that the opposite of what he believed was correct. After he agreed with me on that I told him I thought he was right in the first place. He was really mad and asked me why I had done that. I told him he wasn’t acknowledging the other side as valid and I thought that was limited.

Blessings!
Laura
