Shoes

A friend of mine and I were talking today and he told me something about the Arab culture that was very interesting to me. It came up in a political conversation we were having. He’s Israeli and hearing his perspective is fascinating to me, mostly because he tells me things I didn’t learn in school that I don’t hear much about in America.

My friend told me that if you were to show the bottom of your shoes to an Arab in some parts of the world they would be so insulted they would want to kill you. Shoes are considered the lowest of the low because they are in the dirt all the time. He told me Qaddafi, Libya’s dictator, said women are like shoes. My friend doesn’t like Qaddafi.

When I was studying political science in college, looking at the logic of a how an argument was put together was key to understanding how to bring two sides to a point where they could be in agreement with each other. After hearing what Arabs think about shoes, it doesn’t surprise me at all that there are so many difficulties in the Middle East.

Blessings!
