Love Language

A friend of mine called me today. She’s dealing with relationship issues that are confusing at times and challenging her quite a bit. It’s amazing to see her courage and to talk with her about the situation. When it comes to matters of the heart there isn’t much that surprises me anymore.

It reminded me of a conversation that I had the other day with a very wise girl. The subject of love came up and she said that people have different love languages. Some people feel loved when someone says the “right” thing. Others feel loved when someone buys them things. Others need to be touched to feel loved.

She said that people will tend to express love to others the way the need love expressed to them. So if someone shows love with verbal communication chances are if they receive that back they will feel loved. If they don’t, they may not appreciate someone loving them in a “different language”. That’s a new spin on having a language barrier.

Activity

I remember hearing a man say that activity breeds activity so get moving. It seems to be true in my life. There is an amazing amount of stuff for me to work on during the day and into the night. When I get started on a new goal things take off. That’s a good sign that I have a life and things are happening.

Today I’m running on pure inspiration and 4 hours sleep. If I didn’t have to sleep I would just keep cruising along without a second thought about it, but there’s a wall that I hit after awhile and I just have to be horizontal. I’ve had periods in my life when I wasn’t able to do very much, so it’s cool to be living this reality. It’s a nice change.

The best part about activity is that all kinds of great things can show up out of the blue that are totally unexpected. Being busy keeps me from “looking for stuff” because I just have so much going on that I need to focus on what I’m doing and what needs to get done. My mind loves to be busy, too, so it’s good to have it being productive.

Exposure

What I love about the internet is that I can post things on different websites and get exposure while I live my life and take care of things. It’s the ultimate in multi-tasking and is right up there with doing laundry now that there are washing machines. I am an artist after all and I need to communicate or I’m just not okay.

I once read a book, (forgive me, I forgot the title), that was written by a therapist. He noticed that the only difference between artists and neurotics is that the artists have a way of expressing what they’re feeling inside to other people and neurotics don’t. My latest genre of expression is writing press releases.

So far I’ve written 3 and have put them on www.PRWeb.com. There are some other places I’ve sent them to, but PRWeb.com gives me stats. My most recent release has been read by over 26,000 people and picked-up or printed by over 350 media outlets in the last 20 days. My website has been getting more international traffic as well. Pretty cool, huh!

Contact List

A friend of mine has given me the task of getting 100 new local contacts in the next 60 days of people who like to go out to hear live music in the Los Angeles area, and he is holding me accountable for getting this done. SO, I need some help. If you know anyone who goes out to hear live music around LA, primarily in the Valley, here’s what to do:

Send me their name, address, phone number and email address to Laura@LauraCohnMusic.com. If you send me 4 contacts, I’ll send you and each of them an MP3 of my Christmas song, “Christmas Cheer”. If you send me 10 contacts, you guys all get the song and you’ll get a CD of my music when you come to the next show I have.

I’ll be contacting all the people whose names and info are given to me to verify their email so I can send them the MP3 of “Christmas Cheer”. I would love to get these 100 new LA contacts in less than 60 days so I can get back to working on material to play with the band at CAP. Thank you in advance for helping me out with this. You rock!

Back Online

It’s so nice when things are easy. The phone guy came out this morning and had my phone fixed in about 15 minutes. When my phone rang it brought me back to my familiar routine. I resisted the urge to call a bunch of people since it was early in the morning. I decided I could get online instead now that I had access to my DSL.

I didn’t realize how much I use my phone and the internet until I wasn’t using them. It was fun to be a cell phone girl unconnected to the world via computer for a couple of days. It was nice to relax for Thanksgiving. It got me back to how life used to be before I got busy with technology.

I had more time to do things not getting into the abyss of cyberspace. I love the abyss because there is so much information and so much I can get done via the internet. It’s also great that I can jump back in anytime and it’s there for me. My website hangs out for people to visit without me having to be there. I love it when things are easy.

It's My Birthday!

So this will be short because it's my birthday and I have things to do, places to go, people to see and I'm using a friend's comuter because my land line is fried for some reason, (thank you Mercury retrograde) and I'm in a really good mood. If I can get on another computer tomorrow for Thanksgiving then I'll be writing all about gratitude. I'm looking forward to a great turkey dinner with friends.

When I Just Show Up, Luck Happens

I've heard it said that luck happens when preparation meets opportunity. There seems to be truth in that. I think when I show up for things without an agenda I'm luckier than when I'm looking for something to happen for me.

When I'm kind to strangers and see the beauty in who they are that seems to be more attractive to luck than when I'm out to get something. Usually when I'm not expecting anything or needing something in particular from someone more opportunities are given to me.

There's a peacefulness that is easier for someone to connect with when I just show up for the sheer joy of being there. I'm also able to see what is going on with people because I'm focused on what is happening rather than trying to manuever what is happening.

Blessings!

Actions

I’ve come to a point where I really have to accept that actions speak louder than words and know that what I say doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t match what I do. In cases where there is a big discrepancy between my talk and my walk, I just have to chalk it up to how much more there is for me to learn about my behavior.

I think when I learned to be “polite” I learned to be dishonest and then I didn’t recognize the truth after awhile. I have so wanted to “fit in” that I think I sacrificed what deep down inside I’ve always known. I have to live in a state of love and forgiveness or I’m just a mess. Whether or not it’s popular or promoted in the media, it’s what I have to do.

I’m choosing to be conscious and respectful to myself and others and I’m not buying into the publicity that is being fed to the American public via the media. It doesn’t seem like the current “corporate and political influencers” are looking for scenarios to create the highest good for all. I wonder what would change that.

God, Surprise Me.

Lately I have no idea what anything is for. While I’m in this moment, I really couldn’t tell you where my life is going or why I need to be where I’m at. So, I just show up where I’m scheduled to be and do what needs to be done with the people I’m with. I do get glimpses of “Oh, that’s why I needed to do that.” every so often.

It’s a new discipline for my mind to just hang in the moment instead of going into a shopping list of what I want and what I need in my life. It’s getting easier. I’m learning more about other people and how they live their lives. Listening to other people reassures me I’m okay. I don’t know why that is it just works out that way.

I would like something wonderful to come into my life that will make me really happy that I’ve been following my heart for all these years. I need something to happen for me that gives me confidence. I’m ready for a new chapter in my life, the one where I realize the meaning of my dreams. God, surprise me with something really cool.

Blessings!

Testimonial Shoot

Today was the testimonial shoot for the infomercial I’ve been doing. It was lots of fun. I learned a new make-up trick from the artist that did my face. Sorry guys, this is a girl thing. To make your eyes stand out on camera or on stage, use a white eye pencil on your bottom inner eyelid. Then use a dark liner around your lash line, top and bottom.

It was good to get results from all the working out I’ve done. I lost 8 ¾ inches. I didn’t lose any weight, but that wasn’t really what I was going for. I wanted to get toned. My abs are ripped and my body shape has changed. Now it’s time to get back into running to really fine tune everything. My cardio condition is much improved.

The best part about doing the testimonial on camera for me was that I got to express my gratitude for what I’ve received from being a part of this project. We had a great group of people training together and everyone who stuck to the program got awesome results in their goals. One guy lost 25 lbs. and 29 inches in 7 weeks. This really changed his life.

Magic at CAP

Every so often magic comes together and it seems to happen by Divine assignment. This time it’s happened with my band; Bill McRae on keyboards and Voyce McGinley, III on percussion. We played our second show together at CAP and it was amazing. The audience totally loved it and that made it even more fun.

For whatever the reason is that we just click as a band, I’m grateful for it. There isn’t anything else like the chemistry and the energy that is generated when musicians just have that magic when they play together. I’ve never had it before, so I can appreciate how special it is. I’ve always wanted to find this magic for my music.

Now that the magic is here I’m curious where this will magic will take us. Magic shows up for a reason. Any time something clicks with people it’s because it is meant to be there and it’s doing something that needs to be done. I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed that, but it seems to be the case any time magic shows up in a room.

Consideration

I don’t know why it took me so long to realize that I do have an impact on the people around me. For a long time I didn’t think I mattered all that much. To me, I’m not a big deal here on Earth. In the grand scheme of things I’m not quite a speck but when I walk into a room I’ve noticed that I don’t go unnoticed.

I tend to focus on the beauty in others and don’t have much of a notion of what they see when they look at me. I can see the impact others are having in a situation more than I can see what affect my energy is having. I think that’s because I’m used to being around me so I don’t know the difference.

What I do know is that when I’m being considerate of others, (thinking about what will be helpful and supportive to them in what they need), that I get a lot of support without even looking for it. The more considerate I am of others the more loving they tend to be. I guess that’s what it means when it’s said that giving is receiving.

At Peace

I’m really lucky to have such amazing people in my life. We laugh and have so much fun together. It’s nice when the mundane becomes special because the people around me are so wonderful to be with. Maybe I’m just getting settled into my life and finding it easier to relax lately. Maybe I just value others more than I could before.

My birthday is next week and the best thing about it is that I’m finally the person I’ve always wanted to be. It’s not about the outside material stuff. I still drive the same car I bought 16 years ago. I’ve lived in the same apartment for the last 4 years. I haven’t become a millionaire, yet. It’s what’s inside that jazzes me.

There’s a quality of being comfortable with who I am and how I see what I’m doing here with others that is different for me now. It’s where I find I’m in happiness. There isn’t anything in me creating conflict today in how I relate to people, places, or things. I can appreciate the gifts that surround me and for that I’m very grateful. I like living that.

Results

One time when I was at the gym, a friend was talking to me about how he is in the business of taking action, not in the business of results. He was talking about letting results happen naturally without trying to make them happen while he was doing what he was here to do each day. I really liked that.

It’s a lot easier for me to just show up and do what is there for me to do in a day rather than try to get things to happen. For instance, when I write a press release and put it on http://www.prweb.com/ I get to look at the stats to see my results. I just write it and submit it. What happens after that doesn’t have that much to do with me anyway.

As an artist, my life is an art project to me, so most of the impressions I make are subjective and have a life of their own. What one person sees may not bear any resemblance to what I thought I was creating. That’s where I think Divine Intelligence, what I like to call God, is brilliant. Everyone gets to receive what they need from everything.

Responsibility

I was sitting here wondering what to write about and nothing came to mind. I went and did something and then I heard the word “responsibility” in my head. I made a decision awhile back that I could choose in my "response ability" to not put anyone in a position in my life where they were wrong doing what they needed to do for themselves.

Once the decision was made it required a great deal of discipline on my part to be mindful of what I was doing with people and how I was treating them. I can say that since I made that decision a lot has changed with me. For one thing, I don’t blame people for anything they do or don’t do. I tend to look at what I’m doing and what I need to change.

It’s not that I don’t see things going on with what other people are doing, but I have choices to make about how I associate or don’t associate with what they are doing. I’m finding that while at times it can be challenging to do the right thing, it’s easier to live with overall and I no longer have any drama in my attitude with others. That’s a relief.

Collaboration

I just got back from rehearsing with Bill McRae for our show coming up at CAP, http://www.completeactorsplace.com/, on Nov.18th. It is such a joy to play with this man. He is an exceptional keyboard player for my music. Maybe it’s because he is just that kind of spirit that he helps me bring the most to a show when we play a gig.

My percussionist, Voyce McGinley, III, http://www.voyce3.com/, is a master of rhythm. One day I hope to play a big enough venue to have him on a drum kit for a show. For now, he comes in with a set of congas and a tambourine mounted to a foot pedal device. It is pure magic when he hits the groove and just about anyone could sound good with him on stage.

I’m excited to play in this trio combo with them. It takes what I do as a singer/songwriter to a new level of colors and imagery. Most importantly, we have a lot of fun playing together so the audience gets to be in on a good thing. This will be the second time we’re playing in this configuration together and it feels nice to have found what works best.

Shine

Larry A Thompson spoke to our infomercial class today. He has a book out called “Shine”. He’s managed a lot of stars and produced a number of projects in Hollywood. He’s doing a motivational CD that will be part of the package that is being sold with the fitness product we’ve been working out with.

He said there are 4 things you need to be a star in your life: Talent, Rage, Team, and Luck. Talent is God given. It’s the thing or things that just come naturally to a person. The things that people say, “You know, you should really…..” do. Rage is the focus that makes you the last one standing when everyone else goes home.

Some people call that passion. Rage is more of the mad determination that makes people a little scared of you. Team is the people you need to help support you and guide you through the bends and hills in the road. And luck is something that comes along with hard work when you’re looking for it. Are your eyes open for luck?

Blind Date

I had no idea that when I decided to go on the show Blind Date that so many people I know watch that show. The guy who books me for Michael’s Pub just told me that he was watching the show and it took him a minute when my segment came on for him to realize why I looked so familiar. It was funny.

My neighbor called me when the show aired and left me a message that made me laugh, too. He said he was thinking of me and that he really missed seeing me because it had been awhile since we had ran into each other and then when he got in his apartment he turned on the TV and there I was on his television on Blind Date.

I’ve also gotten emails from people on www.myspace.com that saw the show. My ex and I were watching it and laughed so much at how they edited the date. They used a lot of special effects and came up with some really funny stuff. The actual date was fun. Having a camera crew tag along on a date was a new experience for me.

Prayer

Marianne Williamson, http://www.mariannewilliamson.com/, once said that when she reads the news she knows who to pray for and what prayers need to be sent. She was speaking at Agape Int’l in Culver City. I thought that was a nice way of responding to her concerns about the world. Prayers are a wonderful thing to send.

I was listening to a woman talk about how worried she was about her son and what was happening in his life. She asked what she should do. I told her that praying for him and holding the best vision she could for him doing well would be one of the most loving things she could do. Prayers sent with a strong vision of success are powerful.

I’m always grateful when people pray for me in a loving way. It has gotten me through some really tough spots in my life. Prayers have given me new understanding and new choices that I didn’t have before. The spoken word is magical and when it is filled with passion and deep caring, it can bring miracles to many in need of love.

Blessings, Valerie...

My chiropractor, Dr. Valerie Jacobs passed away on Sunday, November 7th. I got a call last night and was at the memorial service today. She was taken with cancer. The last time I had spoken with her she told me she was doing fine. That was awhile ago. When I got the call that she was gone I was sad. I still am.

Dr. Valerie Jacobs was a special healer. She had a gift and saved my life. When I first met Valerie, my lawyer had sent me to her for treatment. I was on workman’s comp. I had a chemical injury and hadn’t been doing very well. Valerie assured me that I could recover completely and would be fine. Her treatments brought me back to life.

She was at my first one-woman show, “Introducing Rosie Hitler”. She’s on the video in a shot of the audience. Her support and encouragement gave me a lot of strength and courage. I’m so grateful that I was one of the lucky people who knew her when she was here. Dr. Valerie Jacobs, thank you for helping me believe I could have a life.

Influence

One thing that I’ve noticed is that the people who have had the most influence on me are the people who have not put me in a position where I am wrong. It’s a simple courtesy that has lasting effects. It’s not that the challenging personalities that have done battle with me haven’t also had their lasting impression, it’s just different.

The people who have approached me with a “someone is going to win and it won’t be you” attitude aren’t the people I gravitate to anymore. I don’t need to be right. I don’t know how to do that per say. I know that in any given situation on any given day I’m pretty unpredictable. That makes me interesting. You never know what will come next.

When people are able to let me be me I respect that more than anything. It shows me a level of maturity and responsibility that I need to have in myself. One of my friends told me that if she had been able to let people come and go in and out of her life things would have been a lot easier for her. That had a tremendous influence on me.

Blessings!

Press Release

FINDING SOLUTIONS TO CURRENT WORLD CONFLICTS REQUIRES NEW THINKING

In response to the latest news of France’s domestic turmoil, LA based singer/songwriter, Laura Cohn, referred to Albert Einstein for finding an answer to resolve social issues. “Einstein noted that the solution for a problem could not be found using the same thinking that created the problem in the first place.” Cohn said, “As a society, we need to start thinking differently.”

“Many conversations that people are having today are no different than what people were saying about their life circumstance 500 – 2000 years ago.” Cohn noted, saying that in reading books from the middle ages and the Talmudic period she could take many of the commentaries written in those times, place them in any newspaper or magazine today and they would be applicable to our current affairs. Cohn suggests that finding new descriptions in what we say could be helpful so history would not continue to keep repeating itself.

Cohn writes a daily blog at http://www.lacohnzone.blogspot.com/ to voice her observations, questions and musings about her life. She has become a philosophical teacher of sorts introducing concepts of awareness through her writing and her live performances. As a graduate from Tulane University with a degree in Political Science, Cohn is very comfortable debating hot topics and controversial issues.

Great Question

I was talking with a young man today while we were driving toward the Federal Building in Los Angeles. He lives by there and said that there are always demonstrations going on outside on the lawn. It backs up traffic quite a bit. When we drove by, there was a crowd of people waving US and Israeli flags and drivers were honking their car horns.

He asked me why people are always trying to destroy Israel and the Jewish people. He’s a Sephardic Jew. I could feel the sadness in my own heart and in his after he asked. We sat in silence for a moment and I finally said, “I don’t know.” He said that he didn’t know either. We both agreed that it’s sad.

I had spoken with a Jewish Iranian woman earlier who was upset that the President of Iran declared that Israel should be wiped off the face of the Earth. There was even a march where millions of Iranians came out to support him in that declaration. I don’t understand it. I guess I’m not supposed to because otherwise I would.

Amy Kuney

I just got a newsletter about Amy Kuney. If you haven’t heard of this singer/songwriter yet, I’m sure you will. www.amykuney.com is her website. I met Amy when I went to meet Voyce, my percussionist, for the first time. He was playing a gig with her at Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood.

Amy has been working on her album, going to school, and playing some very cool gigs. She’s got a great team working with her and it’s very cool to see so much awesome stuff happening for her. Talent and timing do come together. She’s going to be on the Gilmore Girls TV show November 8th.

If you’d like to be an Amy Kuney fan you won’t be alone. Check out her website and her shows when you can and watch a rising star in the making. I’m really happy for Amy. She’s an inspired songwriter and a nice person. Voyce has heard some of the tracks from the album and he said the songs are killer. This will be one record not to miss.

Reason Doesn't Have To Mean A Thing

That’s from a song I wrote called “Take The Question”. It’s in the bridge. The lyric says, “I remember when I wanted all the answers. All I ever found were more damn questions. Then somewhere down the line I found a reason. Reason doesn’t have to mean a thing. I’ll take the question for my answer. Let me wonder through the ages in my time.”

The line came to mind today because I’ve been dealing with a person that has decided that she needs to get into other people’s business, and not in a very nice way. We all have a story of what we think we’re doing on any given day, so whatever. But it raised the question in me about what I’m seeing in the picture.

When I look at her, I realize that what I see may not be what she has going on in her mind at all. If I choose to see her as a beautiful child of God, it doesn’t matter what she does as long as I stay true to myself in integrity. If I can’t be of help to someone then I’m best to stay out of their way.

Subconscious Programming

My healer friend, Sharon, learned a technique to reprogram the subconscious. Apparently the subconscious runs about 90% of our brain, while our conscious brain gets very little processor space. She was pretty jazzed about it so I was interested in learning more. I’ve known that I’ve been living with stuff in my psyche running my life that I couldn’t get to.

When she told me about the work, she said I should write down some subjects in my life that I wanted to address. That was an easy list to come up with. I was amazed at all the “issues” that I started dealing with once I had written out a general list. That was getting me ready. I was more than ready to do “whatever” she said would give me a new psyche.

What was fun was how my energy shifted when we were doing the work. I could feel my entire being change inside and nothing feels the same, accept for love. That’s a universal thing that remains constant. If you want to do some power house healing work, call Sharon. www.karisebodytherapy.com is her website. She is awesome!

Spinning

Tonight we did a spinning class for our infomercial training. I’d never done a spinning class before. It was amazing how sweat was just pouring out of my skin. I was dripping wet within 20 minutes. That was impressive. It reminded me of being in a sweat lodge but with a little more work on my part.

It was actually really cool because after awhile I was out of my head and just letting my body move. I’m curious how my legs will feel tomorrow. We’re going to do more spinning classes since we’re coming into the two week home stretch now. It’s nice to see the results I’m getting in endurance, muscle tone and improved eating habits.

If you’ve never done a spinning class and are up for a cardio experience, check one out. You may find that spinning is just the thing you needed to get your fitness program on track. I certainly don’t push myself very hard when I work out on my own, so getting 7 weeks of hard core training has been a real gift.

Judgments

I was with some teenagers today. Teenagers fascinate me. They’re very quick in their assessment of things. They don’t always take into account that there may be additional information available that they could investigate which would give them a totally different point of view, but they can call a spade a spade with no fear.

One of them had the opinion that an adult he was dealing with was crazy. I let him know that the “adult” had just put his cat to sleep due to cancer and was very sad because the cat had been with him for 17 years. The teenager was 13. An entire change happened after the teenager heard the news and suddenly he was filled with compassion.

When someone is having a tough time being kind, patient, considerate or aware of their behavior it is usually for a reason. When I ask how someone is doing and I listen to the answer I get to be supportive and the other person gets to express what they need to so they can move on. It’s a simple little thing that can be helpful.

Blessings!
